The Drive-In Delirium list

Here’s another list of films I’ve been kind of working on, namely all the films featured in the Drive-In Delirium DVD series, which I’ve referred to in a few of my reviews. This is a film trailer compilation series released by Australian company Umbrella that has given me hours of pleasure, a treasure trove of vintage exploitation and so forth. I watch these damn things all the time. I got the first two volumes upon their appearance in late 2010, and was delighted by the unexpected appearance of a third volume in May 2012; volumes one and two broadly cover the late 60s to the late 80s, while volume three fills that out a bit more and also reaches further back into the 1950s. Obviously Umbrella have taken their cue from Synapse’s 42nd Street Forever series, and I am a big admirer of those collections too, but Umbrella have the edge for me for two crucial reasons:

1. Thematic grouping. Synapse’s discs are full of fun, but they’re also kind of scattershot. Umbrella’s discs are organised into a remarkable number of themes (women in prison films, blaxploitation, giallo, slashers, New World, Hammer, etc) and the trailers are grouped (mostly) logically under one of those headings. (Volume three does feature a few titles that appeared on the first two in different contexts; Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb has two different trailers, while Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, Torso and Last Cannibal World all appear under two different titles each. Interesting how differently the same film can be marketed.) The “Trailerpalooza” section on the very last disc is the only time when things get random a la the 42nd Street Forever series; it’s a bit like the dumping ground for the trailers they forgot or couldn’t fit on the first two volumes.
2. Sheer weight of numbers. Each volume of the Umbrella series has four discs, and each disc runs just shy of three hours. That’s vast. The actual number of trailers on the discs may be a bit less than that mentioned in the DVD artwork, to be sure, but shit, who cares? That’s still nearly 36 hours of these bloody things. Probably only I have even counted them, anyway. (I was amused to note the promo for the first two volumes on the last disc of vol. 3 gives the actual number.)

Needless to say, I was delighted when the series graduated to blu-ray in 2017, with a 60s/70s edition and 80s edition released that year, “The New Batch” the following year and two more in 2019. Obviously there’s a certain degree of duplication from the DVD sets, but, again, in several cases the trailers are alternate ones and some are markedly upgraded from the DVD versions (most notably Metalstorm, which the BD presents as a proper widescreen film transfer rather than the obviously VHS-sourced thing on the DVD), plus there’s a bunch of new ones whose absences from the DVD editions were kind of conspicuous. That said, the thematic grouping isn’t always as clear in these new collections, I think the DVDs do do that better. Still, nearly 30 hours of the damn things between the five new editions is not to be sniffed at.

This list is kind of the anti-1001 Movies list (despite which, there actually is a small degree of crossover; hell, you’ll even find a few of these in the Criterion Collection). That’s all (well, almost all) the greats of cinema. This is… well, there’s the occasional respectable title on there, but we’re mostly talking epic B-grade stuff. I’ve no doubt whatsoever that in many cases the trailer is better than the film it’s promoting. I haven’t seen nearly as many, proportionally speaking, of these films as I have the 1001 Movies list, but I can tell, just going by the trailer, that there’s a lot of these could probably barely be considered good, let alone actually great. But I’ve long believed people have multiple levels of aesthetic need, and that, try as you might, you can’t subsist on Great Art alone. Sometimes you need a standard classic, but other times you need a cheap bit of exploitation with no higher thoughts or finer feelings. This list is about satisfying those lower needs, which still need satisfying even if they are comparatively base. Nothing wrong with that.

I originally laid this list out in full chronological order, all 962 films in one big list, but I’ve since decided to break the list up into its 37 constituent sections as they appear across the 12 DVDs, for my own convenience as much as anything; I’ve indicated those titles which appear in more than one section, but am only listing them in whichever section they appear first. The one exception is a film called Voodoo Heartbeat, which IMDB tells me is currently considered lost—and you thought that only happened to silent films, didn’t you?—so there’s not much point including it. (IMDB also says Freddie Francis’ Mumsy Nanny Sonny & Girly couldn’t be found when the National Film Theatre ran a Francis retrospective in 2004, but it’s on DVD now so a print must’ve turned up somewhere. Curiously, the copy of the film I’ve found on Youtube was very obviously not taken from that DVD source, so it must’ve been on video at some point.) As a final note, it’s interesting that a few trailers in this series are for films that, as far as I know, are actually still banned in this country…

Bold titles are ones I’ve seen, and ones I’ve reviewed here are obviously further indicated; italicised titles are ones I have in the collection that I haven’t seen yet. Of the ones I haven’t seen, you can decide for yourself which ones you think I’m most interested in, but you probably won’t be surprised to know the 70s/80s sex comedies aren’t a priority…
